Aquaculture, or farm fishing, which was originally developed as an economical solution to the environmental problems caused by overfishing, may actually be more harmful than it is helpful. Wild-caught fish are more nutritious than their farm-raised counterparts, providing a better source of protein and Omega-3 fatty acids, while being lower in fat content. Furthermore, the artificial feedlot conditions of farm fishing not only produce contaminated fish, but also damage surrounding ecosystems by polluting waters and spreading diseases that kill wild fish. When shopping for fish, wild-caught varieties are the healthiest, tastiest, most conscientious choice.
